Mercy Thompson

Status: Mostly dead. This was really a jumping in point for me to start writing. I’m more interested in creating my own stories. Maybe some day I’ll come back to this?
It’s not super-great anyway, but the notes and review sections might be interesting if you’d like to see my thought process while writing.

What did I write fan-fic instead of an original story?

For my first attempt at writing, I thought it would be easier to use an already established universe with a cast of ready-made characters. That way I could concentrate on coming up with a neat story instead of getting bogged down with background information about the world or the people. In fact, in this story, there’s only one new, original character.

Why did I pick Mercy Thompson?

Lately, my wife’s been on a kick of tough-girl, occult/Gothic horror books. I’ll usually try reading her books since I like monsters so much. They tend to range from “I can’t read more than 10 pages of this” to “Well, reading that wasn’t a total waste of time.” Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson books are the only ones I actually look forward to reading. Her books focus less on vampires than werewolves, and I’ve always liked them more. Plus, I have a soft spot for Coyotes.

Why this particular story?

In the Mercy books, the different factions (werewolves, vampires and Fae) all have closely-knit, highly structured societies. One important theme of these stories is Mercy’s attempts to balance her highly independent personality with the need to belong to something. A lot of the problems in the books are resolved by Mercy skirting – or outright breaking – the rules that each of different monster clans uphold. I thought it would be fun for Mercy to meet another character that she could relate to on a personal level without having to worry about a whole bunch of macho, BS rules.

That’s where Hank comes in. Without getting too spoilery, Hank is a one-of-a-kind, just like Mercy. Of course, you can’t write a monster story that’s just about two people becoming friends, so I threw some (hopefully) fun and exciting conflict into the mix.
